A U.S. Navy Diver attached to Mobile Diving Salvage Unit  (MDSU) 2 prepares a lift bag to salvage tires off the coast of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. MDSU-2 is conducting salvage operations in conjunction with U.S. Army Deep Sea Divers, and U.S. Coast Guard divers through the Innovative Readiness Training program. The goal of the salvage mission is to retrieve approximately two million tires. The tires were placed on the ocean floor in the 1970's to act as an artificial reef. However, coral would not stick to the rubber and the tires now present an environmental hazard. Salvage operations will continue for the next month then resume next year. NORTH POLE, Alaska – A National Guardsmen from Nebraska radios in for support after his unit detained a suspected terrorist during an Alaska Shield/Northern Edge 07 scenario here May 9. His radio is networked to the communications systems of other participating local, state, federal and private agencies due to an initiative called the Incident Command System. ]An Airman and Soldiers contain a suspected terrorist after finding an improvised explosive devise (IED) was found while searching his vehicle during an Entry Control Point (ECP) stop. FAIRBANKS, ALASKA - Firemen from the University of Alaska Fairbanks Fire Department carry a simulated accident victim to a triage station May 8 as part of Alaska Shield/Northern Edge 2007. The exercises, which are scheduled to run from May 7-18, will test military and civilian authorities throughout Alaska on all aspects of emergency preparedness as they respond to a variety of scenarios ranging from natural disasters to major accidents. On May 8, the University Fire Department, along with other local rescue workers, responded to a simulated train collision involving hazardous materials and massive casualties.

The lighted service structures on Launch Pad 39A cast Space Shuttle Endeavour in shadow after its arrival on Launch Pad 39A after rolling out of the Vehicle Assembly Building. First motion was at 8:10 p.m. July 10 and the shuttle was hard down on the pad at 3:02 a.m. July 11. Endeavour is scheduled to launch on mission STS-118 on Aug. 7. During the mission, Endeavour will carry into orbit the S5 truss, SPACEHAB module and external stowage platform 3.
