South Carolina National Guard assists with life-saving mission during Hurricane Matthew

ADAMS RUN, S.C. - Soldiers with the South Carolina National Guard responded to a request from emergency services to assist with transportation to a 9-1-1 call in Adams Run, South Carolina, Oct. 8, 2016, as flood waters rise throughout the lowcountry restricting access to citizens who remain behind.

A search and rescue team with the Florida National Guard wades into areas in St. Augustine, Florida, affected by Hurricane Matthew to assist with disaster relief efforts. More than 9000 Guard members are on duty throughout Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas assisting state and local authorities with search and rescue and relief operations.

ARLINGTON, Va. – National Guard members in Florida began aerial and ground search and rescue operations Friday as Hurricane Matthew continued to move northward, pummeling the southern East Coast with heavy rains and wind.

DoD Assistance Team Arrives in Haiti for Post-Hurricane Support

WASHINGTON — U.S. military assistance is on the ground in Haiti to assist and support the tiny island nation with the impact felt from Hurricane Matthew, Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook told reporters.

More Guard members activated in South Carolina and Florida as Hurricane Matthew takes aim

As Hurricane Matthew barreled Thursday toward the southeastern United States, about 4,400 National Guard members were on the ground in South Carolina and Florida helping with preparations and plans for recovery.

U.S. Army North Stands Ready in Event of Disasters, Attacks

WASHINGTON — Army Lt. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan, commander of U.S. Army North, said he agrees with a previous commander’s statement that “if you weren’t paranoid when you came to this command, you certainly will be when you leave.” The command is charged with defending the homeland in the event of a natural disaster or an act of war.

National Guard Assists Southeastern States as Hurricane Matthew Approaches

ARLINGTON, Va. — National Guard members in South Carolina, Florida, Georgia and North Carolina are on duty or ready to be called up to serve as Hurricane Matthew approaches the United States.

According to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Hurricane Center in Miami, Hurricane Matthew is centered about 30 nautical miles south of Tiburon, Haiti, and about 78 nautical miles south of the eastern tip of Cuba, moving north at more than 10 miles an hour. The storm’s maximum sustained winds have been measured at 145 miles an hour, NOAA says. The eye of Hurricane Matthew is expected to hit far-eastern Cuba later Oct. 4, NHC forecasters say, and hurricane models show the hurricane moving along or just off the east coast of Florida and further north along the coast, NOAA says, possibly as far as Massachusetts by Sunday morning, Oct. 9. East Coast Military Bases Prepare for Hurricane Matthew

WASHINGTON — Hurricane Matthew is "a serious storm and … we do stand ready to provide support in the region as needed,” Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook told reporters during a Pentagon briefing.

Alaska Army National Guard supports community with multi-agency exercise

EIELSON AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska — The 103rd Weapons of Mass Destruction-Civil Support Team, composed of Alaska Army National Guard Soldiers and Alaska Air National Guard Airmen, hosted an exercise in Fairbanks, Alaska, Aug. 23 for different agencies in the area including Eielson Air Force Base and Fort Wainwright. The exercise provided an opportunity for different agencies to train together on Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Environmental agents.
