A view from ground firefighting crews as MAFFS 6 drops fire retardant to aid in the control of the Donaldson fire. When full, the tanks being loaded hold 3,000 gallons of fire retardant. Established by Congress in the early '70s as a wildland fire protection program, MAFFS is a joint program with the Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve, and the U.S. Forest Service.

Canadian Forces Lieutenant-General Walter Semianiw, Canada Command commander (left) and Army Gen. Charles Jacoby, Jr., North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command commander, sign military to military plans in Ottawa, Jan. 25, to enhance defense cooperation between Canada and the United States should the governments require each other's assistance. The documents signed were the Civil Assistance Plan, the Combined Defence Plan and an Information Sharing Memorandum of Understanding. Jacoby signed the CAP and the CDP in his capacity as the commander of USNORTHCOM and the MOU as the commander of NORAD and USNORTHCOM. The signings followed the 228th meeting of the Permanent Joint Board on Defence in Ottawa.

Caldwell carries on a family legacy that commenced 34 years earlier when his father, retired Lt. Gen. William Caldwell III, took command of Fifth Army in San Antonio in 1978; he served as the unit’s commanding general until his retirement in 1980.

Hagel addressed issues ranging from the wildfires raging across Colorado to suicide prevention in the Armed Forces. During his first visit since his appointment as Secretary of Defense in February, Hagel visited the North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command, spoke to troops at Fort Carson and toured Cheyenne Mountain AFS.

The NORAD and U.S. Northern Command Missile Warning and Defenders of the Year were awarded in a formal ceremony May 3 in Colorado Springs. The event honored top-performing military and civilan personnel at the headquarters who perform work on or in support of missile defense systems.
