Colorado Army National Guard Sgts. Members of the 8th Civil Support Team leave the safety of the decontaminated area May 3, 2012, and approach a chemical sprayer used in a simulated chemical attack on the U.S. Air Force Academy. An Air Force Reserve C-130 Hercules aircraft expels water during a capabilities demonstration April 23, 2012, here as part of annual Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System II certification. Jacoby, Jr. commander of NORAD and U.S. Northern Command gets a first-hand view of a U.S. Forest Service-owned Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System II on board a 302nd Airlift Wing C-130 April 20. The U.S. Forest Service and the 302nd AW held their annual air tanker certification training April 20 through 23 at Peterson Air Force Base and Pueblo Air Tanker Base, Colo. The U.S. Forest Service-led training was designed to ensure the Air Force Reserve MAFFS crews are ready for the upcoming 2012 firefighting season and included 12 hours of ground training and 35 C-130 training missions in southern Colorado. Air Force Reserve MAFFS-equipped C-130s can be requested by the National Interagency Fire Center and then activated through the U.S. Northern Command, based on an agreement with the Department of Defense.

Navy Adm. James Winnefeld, North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command commander, escorts members of the Canadian Embassy and consulates to NORAD and USNORTHCOM headquarters at the beginning of a visit to the commands Feb. 15. The purpose of the visit was to educate the members of the Canadian Consulate Heads of Mission about the missions of NORAD as well as those assumed by USNORTHCOM after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in connection with homeland defense. More than 20 Embassy and consulate staff members received briefings on the NORAD and USNORTHCOM missions and tours of the NORAD and USNORTHCOM Command Center and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station.

A view from ground firefighting crews as MAFFS 6 drops fire retardant to aid in the control of the Donaldson fire. When full, the tanks being loaded hold 3,000 gallons of fire retardant. Established by Congress in the early '70s as a wildland fire protection program, MAFFS is a joint program with the Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve, and the U.S. Forest Service.
