U.S. Air Force Gen. Gene Renuart, left, commander of North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command, and Canadian Air Force Lt.-Gen. Marc Dumais, commander of Canada Command, signed a Civil Assistance Plan that allows the military from one nation to support the armed forces of the other nation during a civil emergency. The signing took place at U.S. Army North headquarters, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Feb. 14, 2008.

Abe Baum, who led the storied Task Force Baum during the European campaign of WW II, relates his experiences to the men and women of NORAD and USNORTHCOM Feb. 20. Baum was ordered by General George S. Patton on March 26, 1945, to lead a small armored column 60 miles behind German lines to rescue prisoners of war being held by the Nazis at Hammelburg . Patton believed that his son-in-law, Lt. Col. John K. Waters, was being held at the camp. His force of a mere 300 personnel fought their way through an entire German Corps, which mistakenly thought Task Force Baum was a major push by U.S. Forces. Baum's Task Force found more than 1,500 P.O.W.s at the camp, when they expected only 700, and were forced to attempt to escape, only to be either captured or to fight their way back to American lines in small groups. Baum himself was wounded and captured, and ended up in the same prison camp hospital as Waters.

NORAD and USNORTHCOM unveiled their new integrated command center in a May 13 ceremony at the commands’ headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo.

Gen. Gene Renuart, center, commander of North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command, and Kirk Brown, NORAD and USNORTHCOM Combined Federal Campaign chairperson, accept the CFC Regional Excellence Award from Pikes Peak CFC Regional Director Barbara Fitz during a ceremony at command headquarters Jan. 7, 2008. The commands earned the award by increasing their percentage of participants more than any other agency in the region's 2007 Combined Federal Campaign. The commands also raised five thousand dollars more than their goal of $203,000. Directorates in the commands received 14 gold, one silver and one bronze award for their CFC donations, and Brown and Air Force Capt. Mark Walker both received CFC Hero Awards. Brown also was designated as the CFC Regional Civilian Hero and is now eligible for national recognition. During the same time period as CFC, Canadian servicemembers in NORAD raised $21,000 for the Canadian National Defence Workplace Charitable Campaign.

The course presents attendees with a compilation of current policy, directives, guidance and lessons learned regarding the command of a joint task force in the United States and prepares the officers to effectively operate in situations requiring the mobilization of National Guard and active-duty forces.
