The sun sets beyond the Texas horizon as two C-130 Hercules remain ready for aerial firefighting support Sept. 10 at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin, Texas. Just hours before, Airmen assigned to units in Colorado and North Carolina arrived at the airport to form the 302nd Air Expeditionary Group, the Air Force's response to a U.S. Forest Service support request to aid in fighting wildfires. The 302nd AEG's mission is to provide aerial firefighting capabilities using the Modular Airborne Firefighting System, or "MAFFS" system.

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer  USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79) and the guided-missile frigate USS Nicholas (FFG 47) depart Naval Station Norfolk in advance of Hurricane Irene.  Vice Adm. Daniel Holloway, commander, U.S. Second Fleet, ordered Sortie Condition Alpha so the ships could avoid storm damage. FEMA workers arrived at Simmons Army Air Field, Aug. 23, in preparation for Hurricane Irene. The first group of FEMA staff set up the Incident Staging Base in the corner of the air field prepared to welcome over 40 FEMA truck throughout the night and more arriving Aug. 24. FEMA will work hand in hand with the Army Corps of Engineers to ensure Fort Bragg's safety as the hurricane approaches the coastline.
