The new 9-11 memorial on the grounds of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command headquarters includes a steel beam from the World Trade Center donated to NORAD and USNORTHCOM by the National Homeland Defense Foundation which forms the heart of this new memorial. The memorial will be commemorated in a ceremony at 1 p.m. May 18.

Sailors off-load oil spill containment equipment from a C-17 at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base (NAS JRB) New Orleans.  Air Force C-17s, from Anchorage, Alaska, delivered the equipment to support Deepwater Horizon oil spill response. Deepwater Horizon was an ultra-deepwater oil rig located 130 miles southeast of New Orleans that exploded April 20 and sank April 22, causing a massive oil spill threatening the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Air Force Gen. Gene Renuart, North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command commander, discusses his upcoming mission with members of the 302nd Airlift Wing, from Colorado Springs, Colo., April 29. Renuart was in Greeneville, S.C., observing the annual certification exercise for the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems. MAFFS is a partnership between the Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Agriculture forest service and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and provides an additional capability to boost fire suppression efforts during busy wildfire seasons. The certification exercise prepares Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve Command crews in preparation for the fire season.
