U.S. Ambassador to The Bahamas Nicole A. Avant donated $10,000 in books to the Ministry of Education Oct. 5 to support the United States Embassy-initiated “Read To Lead” program. Funding for the book donation was provided by the U.S. Northern Command as part of its long-standing partnership with the island nation. On hand for the official book handover was Deputy Assistant Secretary, Western Hemisphere Affairs, Julissa Reynoso; Delores Ingraham, President, New Providence Association of Public High Schools; Alexis Thompson, student, Sadie Curtis Primary School; U.S. Ambassador Nicole A. Avant, Reagan Cartwright, student, Sadie Curtis Primary School; Navy Lt. Cmdr. Janice Smith, Chief of the U.S. Office of Defense Coordination and Permanent Secretary and Ministry of Education Elma Garraway.

Air crew and loadmasters with the 302nd Air Mobility Wing and members of the U.S. Northern Command Standing Joint Force Headquarters observe closely as the SJFHQ’s Emergency Response Vehicle is loaded onto a C-130 cargo plane for the first time. USNORTHCOM SJFHQ’s mission is to provide Commander, USNORTHCOM with the scalable capability to form the core of a Joint Task Force or to augment multiple organizations in order to anticipate and conduct Homeland Defense and Civil Support missions anywhere in the USNORTHCOM Area of Responsibility during planned or crisis operations.

Army Capt. Christina Taylor, North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command J7, and Army Lt. Gen. Frank Grass, USNORTHCOM deputy commander, cleave through the National Guard birthday cake at the NORAD and USNORTHCOM National Guard Birthday Celebration Dec. 13. Taylor received her commission in the Idaho National Guard in 2002, and Grass enlisted in the Missouri National Guard in 1969. Nearly 6,000 Guardsmen are currently on state orders performing homeland defense missions across the U.S.

Scott Fleming, owner of Scott's Mobile Motorcycle Service, uses Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Troy Thomas's 2000 Harley Davidson Softtail Deuce to teach more than 30 members of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command the proper way to conduct a pre-ride motorcylcle inspection Sept. 24. More than 70 people attended the NORAD and USNORTHCOM Motorcyle Safety Day class, which went over the military regulations pertaining to motorcycles, the proper protective equipment and safety guidelines. After the class, about half the attendees participated in the 110-mile safety ride and Most Desirable Bike contest. The Safety Day kicks off the NORAD and USNORTHCOM Motorcycle Mentorship Program.

Howard Thompson and Lawrence Reyes, cut the U.S. NORTHCOM birthday cake during a celebration at the North American Aerospace Defense Command and USNORTHCOM headquarters Oct. 1. The command stood up on Oct. 1, 2002, in response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. In conjunction with the activation, Joint Forces Headquarters Homeland Security, Joint Task Force Civil Support, Joint Task Force 6, and the Joint Regional Medical Planning Program were transferred from U.S. Joint Forces Command to USNORTHCOM.
