The "Cudslingers" – a wild cow milking team made up of personnel assigned to U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command – won second place in a preliminary round at the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo in Colorado Springs, Colo., July 12, 2007. The team returned to the rodeo July 15 to compete for overall honors in the finals, but was out-milked by a team from Fort Carson, Colo. Acton, deputy commander for U.S. Coast Guard Mobilization and Reserve Affairs - Atlantic Area, inspects the reserve and active-duty Coast Guard troops assigned to U.S. Northern Command April 23 during a commissioning ceremony at Peterson Air Force Base for the new USNORTHCOM Coast Guard Reserve Unit. Capt. Douglas A. Ash commands the new reserve unit, which currently has five members and is expected to grow to 20 over the next few years. U.S. Northern Command and the U.S. Coast Guard effectively coordinate operations in multiple national defense mission areas, including maritime intercept operations, deployed port operations, maritime security and defense, peacetime engagement, and environmental defense operations.

General Gene Renuart, commander of NORAD and USNORTHCOM, addresses more than 700 military and civilians from the space industry at the 23rd National Space Symposium April 11. Renuart spoke to conference atendees about the operator's point of view on space technology, and the importance of continuing to develop space-based capabilities. He said that space-based technology is vital to NORAD and USNORTHCOM's missions.

Col. Frank Kosich updates his staff on the status of Exercise Ardent Sentry '07 hurricane recovery operations. Kosich is the Federal Emergency Management Agency Region I Defense Coordinating Officer, whose job is to work with federal, state and local agencies to ensure U.S. Northern Command's Defense Support of Civil Authorities mission is carried out effectively. U.S. Army North provides the DCO to an area affected by a disaster should Department of Defense response be requested by the President or the Secretary of Defense.

Tech. Sgt. Everett Emerson, an Air National Guard medic from Kulis Air National Guard Base, Alaska, works with firefighters from the North Pole Fire Department to secure a simulated accident victim on a backboard for transportation to the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital May 9. "We've trained for mass casualty exercises, but never this big before," Sergeant Emerson said. The May 9 scenario was part of the Alaska Shield/Northern Edge 2007 exercise which is scheduled from May 7-18. Civilian, military and other government agencies are coming together for the large scale exercise which is designed to test all agencies' preparedness, interaction and response to a variety of incidents ranging from natural disasters to terrorist attacks and other emergencies.
