Additional Military Intelligence Soldiers and communications capabilities approved to support southern border operations

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. – Approximately 180 additional service members have been approved to deploy as part of U.S. Northern Command’s (USNORTHCOM’s) mission to achieve operational control of the U.S. southern border. These additional service members include:

  • Approximately 40 U.S. Army Military Intelligence professionals from XVIII Airborne Corps will deploy to locations in the United States to augment the Joint Intelligence Task Force-Southern Border (JITF-SB), providing all-source intelligence support.
  • The U.S. Army’s 73rd Military Intelligence Company (-) from Fort Drum, NY, will deploy approximately 40 additional Military Intelligence professionals to Fort Huachuca, AZ to augment Joint Task Force-Southern Border (JTF-SB) with additional all-source intelligence support.
  • Approximately 100 U.S. Army personnel from a Corps Signal Brigade to be named at a later date will provide theater-level command and control of deployed signal battalions and other signal units supporting the USNORTHCOM mission along the entire southern border.

Joint Intelligence Task Force-Southern Border was established in February, 2025 to integrate and deconflict intelligence planning and threat analysis to support USNORTHCOM’s effective employment of the Joint Force in protecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the United States.

Joint Task Force-Southern Border was established on March 14, 2025 and is responsible for full-scale, agile, and all-domain operations to allow for more effective and efficient DoD operations while working with U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the southern border.

The exact timeline for these deployments has not been determined and the exact number of personnel will fluctuate as units rotate personnel and as additional forces are tasked to deploy once planning efforts are finalized.

Since January 20th, USNORTHCOM increased its number of personnel deployed to the southern land border from approximately 2,500 to approximately 7,500 personnel.  To date, the Secretary of Defense has ordered over 10,000 personnel from across the services to support USNORTHCOM southern land border operations. Personnel approved to deploy but not currently at the southern border are either supporting operations from their home station or in a status preparing them to deploy with additional capabilities and support if and when necessary.
