Engineer, aviation, medical troops to enhance southern border security operations

PETERSON Space Force Base, Colo. – Approximately 400 additional service members have been approved to deploy as part of U.S. Northern Command’s (USNORTHCOM’s) mission to bolster security at the U.S. southern border:

  • Approximately 385 engineers from the U.S. Army will conduct tasks including construction, mobility support, and various additional engineer operations. Specific engineer missions will be determined after the units reach the southern border area.
    • Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 41st Engineer Battalion, 10th Mountain Division, from Fort Drum, New York
    • 642nd Engineer Company, 41st Engineer Battalion, 10th Mountain Division, from Fort Drum, New York
    • 76th Combat Engineer Company-Stryker, 4th Engineer Battalion, 4th Infantry Division, from Fort Carson, Colorado
  • Additional elements of the following units are also approved to deploy:
    • Headquarters, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, from Fort Stewart, Georgia, will provide command and control and other staff functions for aviation operations.
    • 6th Medical Logistic Management Center from Fort Detrick, Maryland, will provide centralized management of deployed medical logistics.

Additionally, the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade will provide several MQ-1C Gray Eagle Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) with airborne intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (A-ISR) capabilities and their UAS Operator personnel in support of southern border operations.

The exact timeline for these deployments has not been determined.

The deployment of these units will increase the total number of troops deployed or approved to deploy to the southern border to more than 10,000.

The exact number of personnel will fluctuate as units rotate personnel and as additional forces are tasked to deploy once planning efforts are finalized.
