Officials broke ground on a new Special Operations Command North headquarters building at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, Nov. 8, 2021. The groundbreaking ceremony included Lt. Gen. A.C. Roper, deputy commander of U.S. Northern Command; Brig. Gen. Shawn R. Satterfield, commander of Special Operations Command North; Col. Shay Warakomski, commander, Peterson-Schriever Garrison; Heather Duggan, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; and Craig Stearns, senior vice president of JE Dunn Construction. Gen. Darrell Guthrie, Task Force McCoy Commanding General, Brig. Gen. Christopher Norrie, and Department of Homeland Security Federal Coordinator for Fort McCoy, Angie Salazar, on Sept. 26, 2021. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
