JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Nov. 26, 2019) The newest littoral combat ship, the Freedom-variant USS Indianapolis (LCS 17), arrives at Naval Station Mayport. Indianapolis officially joined the fleet on Oct. 26 when it commissioned in Burns Harbor, Ind. Homeported in Mayport, Fla., as the Navy’s 19th littoral combat ship and the 9th Freedom variant, USS Indianapolis was designed for operation in near-shore environments yet capable of open-ocean operation, to defeat asymmetric “anti-access” threats such as mines, quiet diesel submarines and fast surface craft.
