PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. - Army Gen. Charles H. Jacoby, Jr. commander of NORAD and U.S. Northern Command gets a first-hand view of a U.S. Forest Service-owned Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System II on board a 302nd Airlift Wing C-130 April 20. From left to right; Air Force Reserve MAFFS qualified loadmasters Master Sgts. Mark Skarban, Thomas Freeman and Lamont Wood give Jacoby a brief overview of how the system operates. The U.S. Forest Service and the 302nd AW held their annual air tanker certification training April 20 through 23 at Peterson Air Force Base and Pueblo Air Tanker Base, Colo. The U.S. Forest Service-led training was designed to ensure the Air Force Reserve MAFFS crews are ready for the upcoming 2012 firefighting season and included 12 hours of ground training and 35 C-130 training missions in southern Colorado. Air Force Reserve MAFFS-equipped C-130s can be requested by the National Interagency Fire Center and then activated through the U.S. Northern Command, based on an agreement with the Department of Defense.
