WHAT WE DO

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) safeguard and defend the United States and Canada from the emerging global security challenges enduring our nations, forces, and way of life.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command Mission: Conduct aerospace warning, aerospace control, and maritime warning in the defense of North America.

The United States Northern Command Mission: Defend our homeland – deter, detect, deny, and defeat threats to the United States, conduct security cooperation activities with Allies and partners, and support civil authorities.

Our vision is to outpace global competitors, deter adversaries, deny and defeat threats through all-domain awareness, information dominance, decision superiority, and global integration.

NORAD and USNORTHCOM seek to leverage commercial capabilities to achieve our goals of mitigating capability gaps, gaining and maintaining technological advances over our competitors.

The NORAD and USNORTHCOM Requirements Analysis and Resources Directorate (J8) advocates for capabilities and funding in support of the Command’s mission requirements.  The U.S. commercial sector is driving technological advancements that provide our Nation, Allies, and partners a distinct advantage over our competitors.  Our imperative is to pursue solutions that deter and overcome any threat to NORAD and USNORTHCOM capabilities.  Many of these solutions are found in the partnerships we forge with commercial industry.

The NORAD and USNORTHCOM J80 ​​​​​​​Science & Technology, an innovative team pursuing technological solutions that further develop and sustain the homeland defense, defense support of civil authorities, and theater security cooperation missions of the Command’s mission requirements.  The J80 team provides expertise and leadership, promotes innovation and continuous learning, drives technological development and experimentation, and fosters strategic partnerships to deliver solutions to meet priority NORAD and USNORTHCOM capabilities gaps.

The J80 team is responsible for engaging with industry and facilitating integration of commercial capabilities into ongoing operations to enable NORAD and USNORTHCOM objectives.  The Branch’s Vendor Engagement Team is the point of entry and interface for informing industry of NORAD and USNORTHCOM priorities, coordinating engagements with the Command’s senior leaders, and performing outreach with industry partners.
