PETERSON Space Force Base, Colo. – Joint Task Force-Southern Border (JTF-SB) service members, under the direction of U.S. Northern Command, are now operating in the Yuma National Defense Area (YNDA) with installation security support authorities and are responsible for operations in the NDA including, patrolling, temporary detention of unauthorized personnel, maintenance, construction, and upgrade of existing and planned border barrier on the NDA.
The Department of the Navy designated the new NDA in Arizona to enhance U.S. border security operations. This NDA currently spans approximately 32 miles of land adjacent to the Barry M. Goldwater Range and is now part of the Marine Corps Air Station Yuma.
Since April 18, the DoD established two other NDAs in New Mexico and Texas, reinforcing USNORTHCOM’s whole-of-government approach to border security in support of the Department of Homeland Security.
The New Mexico NDA, established on April 21, spans approximately 170 miles of noncontiguous land along the state’s border and serves as an extension of Fort Huachuca. The Texas NDA, an extension of Fort Bliss, covers 63 miles of noncontiguous land between El Paso and Fort Hancock, Texas.
These efforts reflect USNORTHCOM’s ongoing mission as the DoD’s operational lead for the employment of U.S. military forces to carry out the protection of the Territorial Integrity of the United States.
