PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.– The recently released audio tape by Osama Bin Laden announcing that planning was underway for an attack on the homeland stole the headlines Jan. 19. While the tape stirred concern around the nation, the folks at U.S. Northern Command continued their daily regimen of ensuring Bin Laden’s devious plans remain a mere fantasy.
The recording says nothing new, according to the USNORTHCOM deputy director of operations.
To plan another attack on America is "an intent (Osama Bin Laden) has had for a long time," said Rear Adm. Gene Brooks.
"We lean forward hard every day in an interagency, collaborative way to do everything we can to keep his dreams from coming true."
Created in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, USNORTHCOM is charged with conducting operations to deter, prevent, and defeat threats and aggression aimed at the United States, its territories, and interests.
Additionally, USNORTHCOM provides defense support of civil authorities including consequence management operations, such as with Hurricane Katrina, as directed by the President or Secretary of Defense.
