By NORAD and USNORTHCOM Public Affairs

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. - As part of the process for determining the location for the U.S. Northern Command, a Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and Draft Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) has been accomplished for Peterson AFB and Cheyenne Mountain Air Station, Colorado Springs, Colo., Offutt AFB, Omaha, Neb., and Naval Station Norfolk, Norfolk, Va. Both documents will be available for public review and comment June 8-24.

On April 17, the Department of Defense announced the creation of a new unified combatant command, USNORTHCOM. Peterson AFB was named as the preferred location for USNORTHCOM headquarters with alternative locations at Offutt and Norfolk, pending completion of an EA.

Air Force Space Command Civil Engineering has prepared the EA in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 and the Council on Environmental Quality implementing NEPA to analyze the potential environmental impacts of establishing USNORTHCOM. The Draft EA and Draft FONSI are available for review on the web at http://63.227.151.204/ or at each location’s local library. AFSPC Civil Engineering must receive public comments on the EA by June 24.

For additional questions or information on the EA, media can contact AFSPC Public Affairs, Mike Kucharek or Capt. Kirstin Reimann, at (719) 554-3731 during the day, or after hours at (719) 443-4889.
