PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) demonstrated the strength of their integration in homeland defense efforts this week by respectively securing the airspace and supporting interagency partners with specialized military forces during the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in the National Capital Region (NCR).
In support of USNORTHCOM, Joint Task Force-National Capital Region was postured to leverage the rapidly- deployable highly-technical U.S. Marine Corps’ Chemical Biological Incident Response Force (CBIRF). CBIRF capabilities deliver Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and High-Yield Explosive (CBRNE) consequence management capabilities, ensuring on-the-ground robust technical rescue, mass casualty decontamination, and specialized medical stabilization forces to save lives and mitigate further threats.
"An event like the Freedom 250 Grand Prix relies on total interagency synchronization," said Ms. Wanda Squirewell, JTF-NCR Director of Operations. "Our rigorous planning and practical rehearsals ensure that if a crisis occurs, our combined response is seamless, immediate, unyielding, and most importantly, ensuring our homeland remains protected.”
CBIRF serves as a force multiplier for JTF-NCR during National Special Security Events (NSSEs) and unforeseen domestic crises, a partnership that directly supports USNORTHCOM's core mission of homeland defense and defense support of civil authorities (DSCA). Whether responding to an asymmetric adversary attack or a catastrophic industrial accident, the coordination between JTF-NCR's command structure and CBIRF’s technical experts ensured a synchronized, rapid, and decisive response to protect key leaders, federal facilities, and the public, if called.
NORAD’s aerospace warning function monitored the NCR’s Special Flight Rules Area to provide information and decision advantage to enforce the restricted airspace. NORAD fighter aircraft, executing its aerospace warning and aerospace control mission, remained at the ready to safely escort wayward aircraft out of the SFRA. These two distinct NORAD missions enabled the command to deter, detect, track and, if necessary, defeat threats encroaching or in the restricted airspace.
