Lieutenant General Michael D. Dubie is the Deputy Commander, United States Northern Command, and Vice Commander, U.S. Element, North American Aerospace Defense Command at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.
As Deputy Commander, United States Northern Command, General Dubie helps lead the command in anticipating, preparing and responding to threats and aggression aimed at the United States, its territories and interests within the assigned area of responsibility to include Canada, Mexico and The Bahamas, as directed by the President or Secretary of Defense, provide defense support to civil authorities including consequence management operations.
General Dubie was commissioned in 1981 as a second lieutenant, Armor Branch, Army National Guard and subsequently transferred to the Air National Guard. He held a variety of command, staff and supervisory positions at the 158th Fighter Wing and Vermont Joint Force Headquarters. As an F-16 pilot, General Dubie flew numerous sorties supporting NORAD’s aerospace control mission in the defense of North America.
While serving in the 422 Test Squadron as an Operational Test and Evaluation pilot, he helped develop tactics to detect and destroy air and sub launched cruise missiles. In 2004, General Dubie commanded the 447th Air Expeditionary Group at Baghdad International Airport in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Before assuming his current assignment, he served as the Adjutant General of Vermont, responsible for commanding units of the Air and Army National Guard. In 2011, he led Vermont’s eight-state effort responding to the devastation resulting from Tropical Storm Irene. General Dubie is a command pilot with more than 2,000 military flying hours, the majority in the F-16. Additionally, General Dubie is a retired commercial airline pilot.
General Dubie holds a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Vermont and Masters of Arts degree in International Relations from Norwich University. His military education includes the Air Command and Staff College, Air War College, CAPSTONE and the Combined Forces Air Component Commander Course. General Dubie also has been awarded two honorary degrees; Doctor of Laws and Doctor of Humane Letters.
General Dubie’s awards include the Distinguished Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Air Force commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal and several other medals and awards.
