Major General Michael J. Simmering is the Chief of Staff (CS), North American Aerospace Defense Command and United States Northern Command, Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado.
He is the principal advisor to the Combatant Commander and Deputy Commanders on the activities of the command staff. Additionally, he oversees command policies and programs that support the Commander’s priorities and mission to defend North America and provide Defense Support of Civil Authorities.
MG Simmering graduated from the United States Military Academy (USMA) in 1993 and was commissioned into the Armor Branch. MG Simmering has served in a variety of positions throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. He has commanded the 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, the 3rd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, and the Operations Group at the National Training Center. Most recently, he served as the Commander of First Army Division East at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
MG Simmering’s other general officer assignments include service as the Deputy Commanding Officer (Support) and Deputy Commanding Officer (Operations) for 1st Armored Division, as well as United States Armor School Commandant and the Chief of Armor at Fort Benning, GA.
MG Simmering holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering management from USMA and a master’s degree from Kansas State University and National Defense University. He is a graduate of the Joint Advanced Warfighting School and the National Defense University. His awards include operational campaign medals for Southwest Asia, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
