Is NORAD on heightened alert?

Since Christmas Day, and the unsuccessful terror attempt to blow up a commercial airliner, NORAD scrambled and launched three times for a variety of aircraft disturbances. Many people have wondered and questioned if this is unusual, if NORAD is somehow on a new heightened alert. The answer is absolutely not. Although these events have been highlighted more in the media, these are not unusual events for our commands. In fact, in both 2008 and 2009, NORAD scrambled approximately 200 times each year and we’ve responded more than 3,300 times since 9-11.

When it comes to the decision on whether we scramble fighter aircraft or not, each event is evaluated on a case-by-case basis with the best information we have at the time. Our forces will be in place and ready if we are needed. The simple truth is we lean forward every day...the American and Canadian people deserve it.

Thank for your service and your diligent watch. You make us all FEEL safe (less important) and BE safe (vastly more important)from those people who would attack or disrupt our countries and our way of life.

After reading this post I am once again reassured that there is no place safer than American soil. We have the most elite military command in the world for good reason. Our men and women are so dedicated to the cause of freedom and democracy, so that being a proud American is not just lip service, but something on a much deeper level. Something my parents were able to pass to me and now myself passing on to my daughter -- "true safety, security, and freedom!" I love the fact that once a Marine always a Marine, something nobody can take away from me even though many years since I was in active duty.

Knowing NORAD is not just on a heightened sense of alert but always on the "ready" is very satisfying. Thanks to all American defense personnel.
